June Chair Letter

Dieter Eckstein

Dear Quality Professionals,

I hope you are enjoying your Summer and had a great July 4th!

First, I want to congratulate Bob Mehta for being selected to be the recipient of the 2017 Simon Collier Quality Award by our sister section 0700 from Los Angeles.  Please join me to recognize and congratulate Bob Mehta on this very special honor.  Bob Mehta is the second member of our section to be awarded the Simon Collier Quality Award, after Dr. Jack ReVelle.  Gentlemen…congratulations!

Every year, our section takes applications for the Gene Underwood Scholarship.  This scholarship honoring one of the outstanding leaders in the history of our ASQ section.  If you know a college student looking for a little financial help, please have him/her contact Mark Lindsey ( as soon as possible to get a copy of the application and turn it in as soon as possible.  The application will be reviewed and the scholarship recipient for 2017 will be announced in the August or September dinner meeting.

In our July Leadership meeting, we made the decision to sponsor, in partnership with the San Gabriel ASQ Section 0702, the International Team Excellence Award (ITEA) Judge Training in Southern California.  Thanks to the efforts of C.G. Mistry, this training will be made possible in our area.  We hope that by having this training, we open the door for local teams to participate in the ITEA Competition that culminates at the World Conference for Quality and Improvement.  These are the first steps, and I look forward to seeing a team from our area have a shot at winning one of the awards.  Thank you, C.G. for your leadership to bring this training to our area.  If you are interested in this training, please contact C.G. Mistry at our Vinay Goyal at  Here are a couple of links for more information.

In the next month, Dave Nagy will be trying to nominate the next batch of leaders to take the Chair, Treasurer and Secretary positions for our Section.  I would highly recommend the experience in the Leadership Team in our section to anyone, but I would suggest volunteering in support roles first to help make for a more effective transition.  Personally, I have enjoyed the time that I have been involved in the Leadership Committee, from my days as a Historian and Newsletter Editor, to now as the Chair.  If you have been in leadership roles in the past, this may be a great opportunity to polish those leadership skills.  It is definitely a strong challenge to lead a “volunteer” based organization, but the experience I gained is “priceless.”  If you are interested in helping out our Leadership Team or would like to be considered for an officer of the section position, please contact Dave Nagy or contact me to learn more about opportunities.

Right now, we have the Historian position open.  As the Historian, I learned that our ASQ Section has been around for over 50 years.  Our section’s newsletter has been published monthly for most of those 50 years.  Looking at pictures, reading about activities and what our section did in the past, was a great experience.  Our next Historian will have the opportunity to catalog some of this information and hopefully find a way to share it with others and preserve it for others in the future.

Well, my friends…I got done with the most critical audits and assessments of the year just today!  I will take a deep breath and head for the second half of the year to lead my teams for improvements to help my organization shine.  This is the most challenging, yet fun part of the job!  Realizing the role of being an agent for improvement, innovation and striving for excellence!

Have a great second half of 2017, enjoy your vacations and most importantly, enjoy it with those you love!

Best regards,

Dieter Eckstein, BSBM, ASQ CMQ/OE, CQA

Section Chair, ASQ Orange Empire 0701
