Presented by Dr. Joe DeSimone

President and Owner,
DeSimone Quality International, Inc.(DQI)

The concept of GD&T was first introduced by Stanley Parker from Scotland in the late 1930’s. However, it was not used to any degree until WW II because until then, the vast majority of products were made in-house.  The in-house company was the customer, designer, manufacturer and inspector.  The designer would discuss with manufacturing what features were to be contacted to establish the so-called centerlines that were used to locate features such as holes, slots, depths, etc… During the war years, parts were “farmed out” due to mass quantities and production schedules. Often, the parts did not assemble and/or did not function properly hence had to be fixed or scrapped.  There were often scenarios such as false rejections, differences in opinions and interpretation and other deltas effecting quality, reliability and functionality.

GD&T was the solution to this major problem. GD&T provides a designer the tools to have clear, concise, and consistent instructions as to what is required. It eliminates ambiguities hence everyone that is involved with the part will interpret the dimensioning and design intent uniformly. A drawing should be the ultimate communication tool between the designer, manufacturer, and inspector. Today, GD&T is used by > 85% of manufacturing companies internationally.

GD&T is a viable design tool that provides input and solutions to IPD, QFD and VOC, Design for Six Sigma, DFM, Cost Reductions, CNC Programming, DPD, and many other Quality and Productivity initiatives.

In this seminar, Joe will provide you with the language of GD&T (ANSI-Y14.5) and the practical interpretations of the standard from the perspective of the customer, designer, manufacturer and inspector. No matter what your role is, you will learn to quickly be able to interpret drawings with GD&T.  You will understand the VOC, designer’s intent, manufacturing and inspection methods. Common GD&T topics and understanding will include MMC, LMC, Bonus Tolerances, Virtual Condition, True Position, Datums, and other modern terms. You will be well on your way to becoming a viable team member and speaking the same language of GD&T.

This is a full-day seminar, with a 30-minute break for lunch. Both a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided by ASQ. This seminar is eligible for 0.8 RU’s.

– The price for this one-day session seminar is $195.00 for ASQ Members, and $220.00 for non-members.
